Student Code of Conduct 2024 - 2025

Uniforms are worn Monday through Thursday. Friday is a free-dress day, which means that any school-appropriate clothing can be worn on Fridays.

All Grades:

Outerwear worn outside for warmth does not have to meet uniform requirements.
Polos must still be worn if wearing cold-weather gear inside.
Hats, hoods, and scarves are not permitted to be worn inside. Head coverings should not cover student faces.
Headwear worn for religious purposes is acceptable.
On Fridays, students may wear regular street clothes of their choice following the general guidelines.

Elementary (PreK-5th) uniform options include:

Solid Color Polos (no logos, lace, ruffles) in red, navy blue, or white. Polos can be purchased at a number of places, including Target, Walmart, The Children's Place, Old Navy, Costco, Kohl's, and more!
NYOS t-shirt in school colors (navy blue and grey/silver). NYOS provides a number of t-shirt fundraisers throughout the school year which you can purchase apparel from.
Pants, Shorts, Skorts, or Jumpers: navy blue, black, khaki/tan (no denim or athletic/sweatpant material)
Tights/Leggings Under Bottoms: solid color to match bottoms or white
Closed-toe shoes every day (no sandals)

24-25 Secondary (6th-12th) Uniform/Dress Code Expectations

Uniform options for the 24-25 school year have expanded!
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Tops

Collared shirt: solid navy, white, gray, black
NYOS t-shirt in school colors

Undergarments

Undergarments must be covered at all times.

Bottoms

Students may wear loose-fitting pants including dress pants, khakis, cargo pants, jeans, joggers, skorts, jumpers, shorts
Bottoms must be modest. Shorts must extend to or below the index finger. Jeans can have embellishments or rips, of appropriate length, at or below the knee.

Shoes

Closed-toe shoes

Piercings (8th-12th Only) Small facial piercings are ok. No large hoops or large gauges

General Guidelines & Uniform/Dress Violations
Clothing should not be offensive or disrupt the learning environment in any way. Clothing should be neat, fit appropriately, and shirts must cover the abdomen.

Unacceptable clothing and accessories:

Pajamas
Athleisure tights or leggings worn in lieu of pants
Shorts, skorts, or skirts shorter than the tip of the index finger in length or with slits shorter than the tip of the index finger.
Dresses or shirts that only partially cover the shoulders, i.e. spaghetti straps, tank tops, halter tops
Shirts with deep-cut openings, that are sheer or that do not cover the midriff
Visible undergarments
Clothing, accessories, or tattoos with references to alcohol, drugs, sex, tobacco, vulgar language, violence, gang-related affiliation, or other symbols that detract from the learning environment
Bedroom attire (pajamas, slippers, etc.)
Caps, hats, hoods, or any other head covering in the building, except as worn for religious purposes
Hair colors or styles that may cause a distraction to the school environment
Wheeled footwear

Administrators, sponsors, coaches, or other persons in charge of an extracurricular activity (or curricular activity such as a concert), may also regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in school activities. Designated group or team apparel may be designated.

Dress Code & Uniform Violation Consequences
Uniform/Dress Code violations are considered a disciplinary issue and are managed by the administration. Staff is expected to support violation management. See below regarding Violation escalation:

1st Violation: Warning & Parent Contact
2nd Violation: Detention & Parent Contact
3rd Violation: Detention, Community Service, Lost of Privileges & Parent Contact
4th Violation: Admin Discretion

There is a close relationship between high standards of dignity and pride and proper grooming which all contribute to an appropriate learning environment. Modesty will be the dominant feature in all clothes. Attire shall be clean and inoffensive. Students and parents share in the responsibility for the proper grooming of the student; however, the campus administrator has the final authority concerning the propriety of clothes, hairstyle, and jewelry. Students are expected to follow the uniform standards on campus, on field trips, and at other school activities.
