Syllabus Spanish 1B (8th grade)

Description: half credit/ one semester Prerequisite: Sp. 1A (7th. Grade)
Spanish Level B (exploratory languages) introduces the student to the study of Spanish. Students use components of language, make observations about languages and cultures, develop language study skills, and/or acquire simple communicative skills by completing one or more of the knowledge and skills for exploratory languages.
Goals: The five C’s of Language Education.
1. Communication: Students develop communicative abilities in three modes: interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational, integrating the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and showing.
2. Cultures: Students learn about and experience other cultures.
3. Connections: Students use language to acquire new information and knowledge in other subject areas.
4. Comparisons: Students learn the nature of language and culture by comparing other languages and cultures with their own.
5. Communities: Students use languages to participate in communities both home and around the world.
Expectations: The student is expected to:
• Engage in oral and written exchanges of learned material to socialize and to provide and obtain information.
• Demonstrate an understanding of simple, clearly spoken and written language such as simple stories, high-frequency commands, and brief instructions when dealing with familiar topics.
• Present information using familiar words, phrases and sentences to listeners and readers.
Second semester of Spanish 1 Course topics: First quarter
Chapter 3A Theme: La comida (food) Desayuno o Almuerzo?/ Breakfast or Lunch?
• Talk about foods and beverages for breakfast and lunch.
• Talk about likes and dislikes.
• Express how often something is done.
• Understand cultural perspectives on meals.
• Grammar: present tense of ER and IR verbs. Me gustan, me encantan.
Chapter 3B. Theme: La comida (food) Para mantener la salud / Healthy food
• Talk about foods and beverages for dinner.
• Describe what people or things are like.
• Discuss food, health, and exercise choices.
• Understand cultural perspectives on diet and health.
• Grammar: The plurals of adjectives, the verb SER (to be)
Course topics: Second quarter
Chapter 4A Theme: Los pasatiempos (hobbies) Adonde vas? / Where do you go..?
• Talk about locations in your community.
• Discuss leisure activities.
• Talk about where you go and with whom.
• Learn how to ask questions.
• Understand cultural perspectives on leisure activities.
• Grammar: The verb Ir, asking questions.
Chapter 4B Theme: Los pasatiempos (hobbies) Quieres ir conmigo? /Do you want to go with me?
• Talk about activities outside of school.
• Extend, accept, and decline invitations.
• Tell when an event happens.
• Understand cultural perspectives on after school activities./Grammar: Ir + a + infinitive = future, the verb jugar (to play)
• Chapter 5A Theme: Mi familia (my family)Vocabulary of the family members. Grammar: Verb Tener (to have), possessive adjectives.
