this is what the earth looks like from outer space it is a giant sphere your **** is so large that if it was possible to walk around the planet at the equator it would take more than 5 years  of course isn't possible because of all the water the Earth is often referred to as the water  this old is a model of the Earth we can easily see that there is quite a bit more water than land on our Indian  and the Pacific Ocean is a large body of water Globe also shows the seven large land masses called continents the continents are Africa  Antarctica Asia  Australia Europe North America and South America most Globes will also show countries and major cities  **** are scale models may have work with a scale model before when building a plastic plane or car a scale model is designed so that it is a perfect copy of sing it is fashioned after this model car is a copy of a real car the scale of this model is 1 - 24 so 1 inch on the model equals 24 inches on the real car for one 2 meter equals 24 centimeters in the same way the globe is a perfect model of the Earth but it is smaller this globe is 42 million times smaller than the real Earth that means that the Earth is 42 Indian times larger than this money on the globe is a key or legend that shows the scale of the globe on this globe every inch is equal to 660 miles and every centimeter is equal to 418 kilometers  so someone using this globe could make measurements in either miles or kilometers you can find the distance between two places with the help of a string and a ruler  put one end of the string on one location and the string to the other location no measure the distance between the two points on the string  since each inch 660 Mi you can figure out the Distance by multiplying measure the string distance in centimeters and x 4 results the Earth is divided into sections called hemispheres a hemisphere he is half of a sphere there are four hemispheres  the equator is an imaginary line that lies halfway between the North and South Poles equator is used to divide the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres  here is the northern hemisphere it is like looking straight down on the globe with the North Pole in the center  the southern hemisphere is like looking straight down on the South Pole  the Earth can also be divided into the Western Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere when looking at Globe we can only see half the planet at a time  you may have noticed that the globe is tilted see how the globe spins around these holders located at the North and South Poles there not straight up and down tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees  the gold is set up this way because of the real Earth is tilted on an imaginary line that runs through the North and South Poles this imaginary line is called an axis it is where are the Earth spins the Earth is tilted in space if orbits or goes around the sun which is the weather of our solar system one complete revolution of the sun is called a year the Earth orbits the Sun in an oval and not a perfect circle  there are times when the planet is closer to the Sun than it other times you may think why is why we have seasons when we're closer to the sun we have warm weather and when far away we have colder weather for Windsor however that isn't the reason for the season it's the tilt of the Earth on its axis  when the earth is tilted towards the northern hemisphere has spring or summer and the southern hemisphere watch because the rays of sunlight strike the Northern Hemisphere when the earth is tilted towards the Sun why does warmer than sunlight that spreads out over a large area just like the light from the papers straight on when the flashlight is tilted the light spreads out over a larger area and therefore won't be as hot or weight in specific areas  so the Earth experience different seasons based on how the planet is tilted and where the plan is there any yearly orbit of the Sun  another thing to remember is that the northern and southern hemispheres have opposite season when the northern hemisphere has summer the southern hemisphere has winter there are lines drawn on the globe to help find location some of the lines go around the globe like the equator these lines are called lines of latitude X parallels they are numbered the equator is the starting point and is labeled 0 degrees then equal space lines of latitude north and south from the equator  they are labeled in degrees all the way to 90 degrees at the poles  when looking at latitudes in the northern hemisphere we say 30 degrees when reading lines of latitude in the southern hemisphere we say 30 degrees south latitude running the other direction on the globe are imaginary lines called lines of longitude lines measure degrees east and west the starting point for lines of longitude is called the prime meridian Meridian is another name for longitude the Prime Meridian is labeled 0 degrees and runs from the north to the South Pole  here you can see where the prime Lincoln goes through part of England Europe and Africa  noticed that lines of longitude that are to the left or west skip the prime meridian are labeled w  to the east of the Prime Meridian the lines are labeled 4 East there are 180 degrees east and 180 degrees west The 100 80 degree line is not marked as east or west this line of longitude runs through the Pacific Ocean  unlike the lines of latitude which are always the same distance apart the lines of longitude are far apart at the equator and actually come together at the poles When lines of latitude and two door used together a grid the grid provides a way to locate places on the globe Chapel Mexico City the capital of Mexico is almost exactly at the intersection of a line of latitude and longitude it is what degrees north and 100 degrees west the address for Mexico City would be 20 degrees north 100 degrees west  when giving the location of a place on a globe or a map always give latitude first longitude II  you also must indicate either latitude north or south and longitude used or west  those are very useful for locating places on Earth however geographers use other tools to help the information about the earth and its people that shows the size of the continents in square miles weekend then organize the continents by size to see the largest to the smallest the table was used list the continents and their sizes in the table order or ranking was not important just the collection of data if we wanted to show the relationship of the continents to each other we could use a pie graph this is a circle graph where Circle  then each continent is shown as a section of that Circle or pie who's is represents how much of the whole pie equals a pie graph is a visual way to look at information you disease e-2c that the Asian continent is the largest  sometimes it is better to show information in a bar graph bar graph shows the five largest cities in the world for 1990 has two axes the vertical axis in case shows the population in millions of people to avoid cluttering the graph with a lot of zeros the zeros in the numbers are not in and instead it says population in millions that means each number is in the millions so Mexico City doesn't have 23 people it has 20 million three hundred thousand people the horizontal axis shows cities being compared a bar for each city is drawn to show its population another way to represent information could be with the use of a symbol chart each symbol which is a little person stand people on the half a person means 1 million people of quarter of a person would be half a million people  computers are very helpful when preparing a graph because they allow people to experiment with different designs to find the one they like the best a globe is a model of the earth that is made to a certain scale it is the best example of what our planet is like because it is the same shape as fear the scale of the globe will be shown the scale for this globe is 1 - 40 chameleon this mean that the model is 42 million times smaller than the wheel Earth however the model will lamphere's very well because the continents and oceans are shown with proper relationship to each other the four major water are user called oceans those oceans are the Atlantic the Arctic Indian and the Pacific the seven continents are the land as the Earth orbits the Sun the globe is also tilted to show this relationship there is a grid system used on the globe to help locate places on the planet the grid system is made up lines of latitude and lines of longitude lines of latitude are also referred to as parallels play some degrees latitude lines of latitude flysouth are shown with an s the North Pole is at 90 degrees north latitude the
