Purpose and Scope
The purpose of the Parent Code of Conduct is to provide a mutual understanding to all parents/guardians and visitors to our school about conduct expectations while on school property, at school events and when interacting with NYOS employees and/or students.
General Propositions
We expect parents/guardians, visitors, and school staff members to have a fundamental understanding and commitment to the following general propositions:
-
Teachers, administrators and parents/guardians are partners in NYOS students’ education and should work respectfully together.
-
Professional decorum and respect is expected from all members of the community as we are examples for students.
-
Matters of concern are best resolved directly between parents/guardians and teachers or other school staff members.
-
Coming together with attitudes of inquiry and respect for other viewpoints will best bring about peaceful resolutions to issues.
-
NYOS Grievance procedures outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook will be followed.
Prohibited Behaviors
To provide a peaceful and safe school environment, parents/guardians of NYOS Charter School students should NOT:
-
Make abusive, threatening, profane or harassing comments to or about school staff members, whether in person, by e-mail, text, voicemail, phone, digital conferencing, or on social media platforms
-
Use Facebook or any other social media network to campaign against individual staff members, the school, or policies implemented by the school
-
Behave in a manner that is disruptive, interferes or threatens to interfere with school operations, including classrooms, offices or duty stations, lobby, or school grounds, including the parking lot
-
Refuse to comply with any reasonable order of a school official attempting to perform his/her duties, including in the arrival/dismissal line.
-
Threaten to inflict mental or physical harm or damage property to a NYOS staff member, visitor, fellow parent/guardian or student
-
Damage or destroy school property
Consequences
Consequences of prohibited behavior will depend on the nature and severity of the incident, using all available, relevant evidence. Initial consequences may include verbal or written warnings or requests to meet with a school administrator to find opportunities for remediation. If unacceptable behavior continues or is of a serious nature, a parent or guardian may be subject to additional consequences including restricted communications with staff or limitations on access to school events or school property. Offenses rising to the level of a criminal offense will be reported to law enforcement.
