TAFE:

Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) is a co-curricular organization at NYOS that encourages our students to learn more about education and teaching professions while they build the character, service, and leadership skills.

During this time of at-home learning, our TAFE students have come together to create a series of brand new e-newsletters, called the TAFE Tribune. Between now and the end of this school year, we'll be featuring the TAFE Tribune for our entire school community!

In this first issue, our TAFE officers share resources related to at-home activities, mental health resources, fundraising opportunities, spreading kindness, ways to help your local community, and even additional at-home, educational resources for students. In the second issue, our TAFE students provide resources related to at-home learning testimonials, making a cloth face mask, tips on staying productive, and showing appreciation towards one another and supporting our local community. Click the image below to read Issue 2 of the TAFE Tribune:

TAFE Tribune Issue 2

In the third issue of the TAFE Tribune, our TAFE students provide words of appreciation - including a thoughtful poem - for our graduating Seniors, thank you messages to host teachers at NYOS, and information in support of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. PALs:

NYOS PALs serve as positive role models and trained peer helpers within our school community. Our PALs also mentor younger NYOS students, called PALees, creating a variety of activities for their PALees to participate in as they form strong bonds together. While NYOS students participate in at-home learning, our PALs created a video series where they lead at-home activities that fellow students can participate in.

"I decided to make playdough because it's super easy to make and it is fun to play with. I also wanted my brother (Matthew) to have something fun to play with."

"This lesson plan that I gathered was a coffee filter butterfly, and the background of this arts and crafts meaning well for me is that butterflies are free and they can go anywhere that they want for a certain time. And right now on what's happening around the world, I wanted to do this activity for the fellow kids was to relieve their mind and just focus on their family and not right now what's going on because they might not understand you but later on the future they will and also not put too much worried on them about their parents and just have a great time at home with their loved ones oh, so this is why I did this arts and crafts video and idea."

"I chose this project because I love crafts. I had a bunch of old magazines laying around and I thought it would be a great opportunity to turn it into something I'd love."

"I picked this dance activity because I know other people will do either arts and crafts or tag. And I thought “oh no one has chosen to do dance!”, So I picked it. I also want kids to be happy and cheery during this hard time, being stuck at home."

"My video is a quick little tutorial on a soccer drill my coach told me about. All you need is a ball and a wall, then you just kick the ball at the wall and let the ball come back to you. You just keep doing that to build quick feet on and off the ball."

"Here’s a short simple video on how to make a corner bookmark! I made this video for all the students that may not have book marks themselves and don’t want to ruin their book by folding the corner of their pages. It only requires one material which makes it possible for everyone to create this craft at home themselves! Hope you enjoy!"

Watercolor Tutorial by: Jenny
"I decided to choose this video because it is super simple and doesn't require ANY new products, you can use any marker you have laying around to make your own Watercolors!"

"My video is about some basketball tricks I learned. This is how I first learned these tricks."
