About me

This is my seventh year at NYOS and I am now an official all star (I like to dream big!).  I continue to enjoy teaching and being a mom to my two children, Olivia, age 15, and Camden, age 11. When I'm not working, I enjoy reading, yoga, gardening, hiking, cooking and spending time with my family.

I am inspired by your children and their enthusiasm in learning. I feel honored to be a part of your families!

Competency Based Education

Dear Parents,

The fourth grade team is excited to let you know that we have just started Competency Based Education (CBE) in our math curriculum. CBE allows students to demonstrate mastery of the current skill, usually through a pre-test and 2 learning stations, and then to move on to the next learning target at their own pace. Resources, such as learning videos and websites, will be provided to support their individual learning. Students do not move on until they have mastered the previous skill. This way, we can support each child at their own pace until mastery of the skill is demonstrated.

Students are encouraged to take a pre-test but it is always completely optional for each student. Teachers and students will track progress and celebrate successes. We appreciate your support and please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Marcy Shapiro

Spring Break Suggested Homework

Dear parents,

Over Spring break, I hope you and your child will be able to take the time to relax and enjoy each other!  The fifth grade team decided not to send home a required packet of work because we want you and your child to take time to unwind and spend time together.  We do expect each child to read at least 30 minutes per day.

We are encouraging students to practice math and reading skills twice a week.  Here are some websites that the students have access to and will be the most beneficial for them to practice.

Fun Run 2016

Mark your calendars for this year’s Not Your Ordinary Run, NYOS’s third annual 5k and kids k.  This year’s run will take place on April 16, 2016, at Pfluger Park in Pflugerville!

The Not Your Ordinary Run is a great way to promote health & wellness in our community while simultaneously raising funds for all of our innovative instructional programs!  We hope to see 100% of our NYOS Community involved!

As you know, fundraising is a necessity to maintain the programs and resources we value at NYOS.  The money we raise will help fund PE equipment, updated computer hardware and software, an optimized nutrition program, academic enrichment and resources for special education and gifted/talented programs, and elementary counseling.

Student registration for the Not Your Ordinary Run is free—with the submission of 5 different complete addresses of friends or family (no business or celebrity addresses) for each student.  The addresses will be used to send postcards about the run to individuals who support each student and whom we hope will send a donation to the school and/or join us for the event.  Every student who registers receives a free t-shirt and the opportunity to run/walk a 1K or 5K.

All student registration must be completed by February 19 so that we can order our t-shirts!

Please check out more details for this year’s run at www.nyosfunrun.com.
