NYOS Charter School provides a variety of extracurricular activities and after-school clubs to contribute to not just the academic growth, but the social and emotional development of our students. We provide the following extracurricular and club opportunity for Kindergarten through 5th graders:
Art History Club - Open to 4th and 5th graders, Art History Club provides students with the opportunity to explore art history outside of the traditional classroom setting.
Chess Club - Taught by local chess expert Gary Gaiffe and associates, instruction includes basic to advanced skills, tournament play, notation and chess variations to K-12 students at all abilities!
The club meets on Fridays from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Lamar campus. K-3rd students are allowed to ride the bus to the Lamar campus after school on Friday. Chess Club fees are $5 per class, and is due at the beginning of each quarter. Make checks out to Gary Gaiffe or Rocks and Rooks. There are also moderate fees if you wish to participate in tournaments, including a membership to the United States Chess Federation (USCF.)
Parent volunteers are required every week to watch the students from 12:15 to 1:00 PM when chess starts and then assist until chess is over at 2:00 PM. This is a parent run activity and cannot continue without your help. If we do not get enough help we will be forced to abandon this club. For more information, contact Gary Gaiffe at firstname.lastname@example.org.
