General Intervention Support Team (GIST)
NYOS uses the General Intervention Support Team, GIST, as a training tool to support the work of the campus team of administrators and teachers as they address the needs of struggling learners. GIST provides a strategic process for early identification of learning/behavior concerns of students as well as the necessary tools for selecting appropriate interventions toward a positive solution for the student and teacher. GIST helps to:
- Establish a comprehensive campus-based process for identifying students who are struggling in the classroom (either academically or behaviorally)
- Implement coordinated early intervening services designed to address the learning needs of students and prevent the need to refer students to special education
- Provide a system for supporting the implementation of a response to intervention process for early identification of students with learning differences
- Assist teachers in identifying specific research-based strategies to meet the diverse needs of students in the classroom to prevent unnecessary referral to special education. Provide coordinated early intervening services to struggling students, as described in NCLB and IDEA 2004.
