My educational and professional background is varied. I received a B.A. in psychology with a minor in English from the University of Dallas and went on to complete graduate studies in folklore at U.N.C. Chapel Hill. Later, I went back to school to get my teaching credentials, doing graduate work at Brooklyn College, and earning my M.S. in Instructional Technology from New York Institute of Technology.
Growing up in East Texas, I dreamed of traveling. As a college student, I spent a semester in Rome, traveling across Europe. After graduation, I moved to North Carolina to attend U.N.C. Chapel Hill. Upon finishing my coursework, I moved to Brooklyn, NY, and began my career in promotions and public relations. After several years, I decided to become a teacher. I began my new career as an 8th grade American History and English teacher. I then taught 4th grade, library and technology skills, piloted a program that brought laptops into the classroom, and worked as a technology coordinator.
Moving back to Texas, I worked for National Evaluation Systems as a writer and editor of teacher certification tests in the area of pedagogy. Although I had not planned to return to the classroom, I found I really missed teaching. In January 2006, I accepted position at NYOS teaching 4th and 5th grade. After three and a half years, I moved to NYOS Secondary, to teach technology applications and journalism courses.
I have a wonderful family that includes my husband, two sons, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, a granddaughter, three dogs, and two cats.I love learning new skills and enjoy a wide variety of hobbies outside of school, including travel, paddleboarding , hiking, reading, and sewing, gardening and a variety of art projects.
