Please join us for our holiday party on Wednesday, Dec. 14th from 1:30-2:30. Many students have already offered to bring food for the party. Below is a party list but feel free to make any changes to your child’s suggestion, as needed. After the party, we will clean up the room and watch a movie, so if you would like to take your child home early to start your own holiday, you may.
Students have asked if we can participate in a “Secret Santa,” where they make and buy small gifts (under $6) for each other. Students will fill out a form about their likes and favorite items, and another student will be their secret Santa and create a little gift bag for him or her. Suggestions for gifts are drawings, books, madlibs, crafts, stickers, ornaments or decorations. Students will also need to write an appreciation to the gifted student.
If you do not wish to allow your child to participate, please let me know ahead of time. Also, if you are unable to help your child make or purchase items, I will gladly help with that. We will pass out the gifts at our holiday party.
Also, Thursday, Dec. 15th is a half day. This was not previously on our calendar, so please make note of it.

We would appreciate it if anyone wanted to bring guacamole or any healthy or savory items. Fruits and vegetables are always great to have. I will have extra Ziploc to let students take home leftovers.

Greetings NYOS Parents!
You are receiving this email because you have a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade student at NYOS. I am working to purchase classical guitars for the 4th and 5th grade students to use in class. As many of you know the high school has a classical guitar program, this would be a way for our students to get a head start if they wish to continue with those classes later. It will also allow all students to have a truly meaningful experience in music class that they can take with them throughout their lives. My goal is to be able to purchase a classroom set of guitars by the start of next semester so 4th and 5th grade students can start learning as soon as we finish our recorder unit in January.
There are a few things you can do to help! First, you can visit the link at the bottom of this email and donate if you can. Second, you can share this email with friends and family that would be interested in helping support music at NYOS.
Thank you so much for all you do for our school.

The fourth grade team is excited to let you know that we have just started Competency Based Education (CBE) in our math curriculum. CBE allows students to demonstrate mastery of the current skill, usually through a pre-test and 2 learning stations, and then to move on to the next learning target at their own pace. Resources, such as learning videos and websites, will be provided to support their individual learning. Students do not move on until they have mastered the previous skill. This way, we can support each child at their own pace until mastery of the skill is demonstrated.
Students are encouraged to take a pre-test but it is always completely optional for each student. Teachers and students will track progress and celebrate successes. We appreciate your support and please let us know if you have any questions.
